Using AVM Toolkit

Image/Template Lists

Clicking either the Images or Templates tabs will show a listing of all of the selected assets. Images are identified by their file name (which can not be edited). Template names are set when the template is created and can be edited later.

The default sorting is by "Metadata Date" (i.e. last updated) in reverse chonological order. There are several other sorting options (these settings are not sticky and revert to defaults when you return to this tab).

The icon controls on the right of each image let you edit, download, and delete them.

To edit the image, click its thumbnail, title, or edit button.

Clicking the download button on an image will transfer the tagged file to your default downloads directory. Downloading a template will transfer an XMP sidecar file (which may be used in Photoshop)

Uploads Tab

You may upload images or templates directly from the Uploads tab. The "Choose Files" button opens up a file picker. Files may also be dragged into the well around the button.

It is possible to open multiple images at the same time using either the file picker or by dragging multiple files into the well.

Templates may be uploaded from either sidecar .xmp files or extracted from images. If an image is uploaded as a template the image file is not retained. Templates must be named when they are uploaded.

Editor Interface

The editor works basically the same for both images and templates. Each sub-tab jumps to a different section of the AVM metadata. You can switch back and forth between tabs without losing your edits, but you must "Save Changes" before leaving this page or the changes will be lost.

Long text fields can be resized using the thumb control at the lower right.

Date fields bring up a date picker, or you can type the date directly into the field.

List fields have a "+" tab that adds an element as a new row, duplicating the values in the current row. Rows can be deleted using the "-" button. Rows may be reordered by selective duplication and deletion.

Controlled vocabulary fields use pop-ups to set their value. Choose "undefined" to clear the field.

Subject.Category uses a contextual set of pop-up menus that update based on each selection. "All" indicates a match to all sub-fields and can be used when you do not want to dig deeper into the hierarchy. Both the numeric and text values are displayed, but only the numeric values are stored.

All the metadata under a given tab may be cleared out using the "Clear Tab" button on the right side. It will not affect the contents under the other tabs.

Both templates and images have similar controls. You can download the image/XMP file (right click and choose to save the linked file), save or cancel changes, and delete the image/template.

Images give you a "Create Template" option that copies all of the saved metadata into a new template. Make sure to name it or it will show up without a title in the listing.

Working with Templates

Templates give you a "Tag Images" option that presents thumbnails of all of the currently saved images. Select all of the images you want to receive the template and choose "Apply". Note that you have two stamping options:

  • Merge Over will overwrite the image with the data from the template for all non-blank entries in the template. Use this to make sure all the selected images exactly match the template fields. The remaining image fields will retain their existing values.
  • Merge Under will only write the template fields into image fields that have been left blank. Use this to fill in missing metadata but to leave any existing image tags untouched.
  • Replace all values will delete all fields in the image and replace them with the exact values from the template.

NOTE: If you ware working on an image and want to directly apply a template using the lower left pop-up control (red), make sure to save any existing edits before applying the template. The template will be applied to the last saved version; any unsaved changes in the editor will be lost.

Settings Tab

Under the settings tab you may update your account settings. This includes updating any of the IDs/passwords you set when the account was created.

You may also delete the account and all of its associated assets.
